Reredos
Shelf
The
new reredos shelf has been installed in the sanctuary behind the altar.
The reredos is often a location for religious art work in Christian
architecture. Note, for example, the reredos behind the chapel altar. A
reredos shelf is a standard feature in Anglican churches. The shelf will
hold flowers, especially seasonal flowers that mark the liturgical year.
The shelf also contains a tabernacle for the consecrated bread and wine.
The door of the tabernacle was hand carved by Ernie Clarke, the shelf
designer, and features the chi rho symbol for Christ. The Greek letters
chi rho are the first two letters in the Greek word Christos meaning
anointed one. The shelf was designed by Ernie Clarke and constructed by
Martin and Michael Hadley.
