Sunday School
Annual
Report 2006
Sunday
School enrolment for 2006 remained unchanged from last year at 26 students
in four combined classes from Preschool to Grade 6. Each class averaged
about 6-7 students. This year there were enough students for a
confirmation class of 9. We had five wonderful young people helping with
the Preschool & Primary class: Maria Josey, Ellen Peters, Francina
Lynch, Sarah Edwards and Brittany MacCallum. Other dedicated teachers
remained as in previous years: Nancy Green and Lisa Hamilton (Grade 1-2),
Nancy Knight and Kathy Mason (Grade 3-4), Kenneth Francis and Audrey Li
(Grade 5-6). The confirmation class was expertly taught by our warden
Carmon Stone. Colleen Day, our remarkable music director for the past 5
years joined the church choir at the beginning of the Advent season. Her
role was ably carried on by Ken Francis. We thank them both for their
dedicated services. Brian Field continued to be our superb accompanist.
We
embarked on two new curricula this year: Firelight II (Augsburg Fortress)
with two themes: Kingdom Stories and Most Certainly True (Living the
Catechism), and the Seasons of the Spirit, a revised common
lectionary-based curriculum (Wood Lake Books, Inc). The two curricula
provided flexibility and variety to the teaching.
To
encourage fellowship among young people and outreach, we hosted volley
ball evenings on several occasions, bringing in the young and the
not-so-young, church and non-church members together for an evening of fun
and games. Because of its success, it will be continued on a regular basis
in the future and everyone is welcome.
Other
outreach projects included our Lenten Fair held last April based on the
theme : "Water for all". We raised over $400 for Primates World
Relief and Development Fund (PWDRF). We also generated $200 from bake
sales towards our Christmas outreach project The funds provided
income-generating livestock and eye-sight saving vitamin D to needy
families and children all over the world through World Vision of Canada
and Christian Blind Mission International.
As
in previous years, the Sunday School contributed importantly to the
Christmas Eve and Good Friday Family services. Our music directors,
accompanist, teaching staff and the students worked very hard in
preparation for these events. At both services, the church orchestra
provided beautiful music under the expert direction of Dr. David Wilson.
Other activities during the year included a "Meet & Greet"
social with parents and parishioners during coffee hour in early October,
a Closing ceremony in May and a potluck supper in June where teachers,
parents and parishioners mingled and enjoyed delicious home-made cooking.
This
year the attendance prizes went to : Trent Field, Kate Hinchey-Day, Bailey
Francis, Ryan Mason, Nelson Field, Faye Hiscock, Nolan Field,
Bella
Hiscock and Emma Hefferman.
As
always, none of the above activities would have been possible without the
great teamwork and dedication of the Sunday School staff members. To them,
a big Thank You! I invite any one who is interested in helping with
Christian education to please join our wonderful staff to build a bright
future for our church.
Respectfully
submitted,
Audrey Li
