Club was founded on January 15, 1952 at an organizational meeting held at
the rectory on the Bay Road. Those present included Canon and Mrs.
Holm, Jack and Mabel Doucett, Francis and Ramsey Stirling, and Shirley and
Mel Matheson. The organization was called The Young Married Couples'
Club. The first official club meeting took place February 20, 1952
in the old parish hall. The purpose of this club was to provide
young married couples with a place to meet, exchange ideas, and enjoy good
Christian Fellowship. The name changed to St. James' Social Club in
1975. Over the years, the club undertook many worthwhile projects:
the formation of a nursery (that still operates today); a bowling league;
an annual Christmas Party for members of the Multiple Sclerosis Society;
providing assistance with church and parish functions; and helping needy
families. Activities
include: meetings with guest speakers, slide shows, movies, church service
and hymn sings, Pot Luck Suppers, Games Night, Irish Night, Christmas
Party, etc. A list of this years' activities appears below. (return

DINNER 2005 On
May 7, 2005 the Social Club held its annual Lobster Supper including the
Bowling Club. Members meet at 09:00 in the morning to set up the hall and
prepare the meal.
John Cutler who has done this for many years and does a great job cooked
the lobster on site in the early afternoon. Bee Mason directed the
preparing of the meal with other members helping. Margaret Teal again this
year prepared the delicious fruit punch, which was served prior to the
meal. We served 99 lobster dinners along with 8 chicken dinners. This was
the largest Lobster Supper to date! We had as our guest speaker, Captain
Angus MacDonald, who gave an interesting talk including lots of history on
his trip to the Cook Islands and New Zealand and his return via a
container ship with various stops along with way ending in Philadelphia,
USA.
It was a wonderful evening of fellowship with a great meal and an
interesting speaker.
Remember all members of the Parish are welcome to attend the Social Club
for any or all of the meetings. The most enjoyable part of the Social Club
is the fellowship with your parish members so please make an effort to
join for a meeting or two when we start in the fall. (return

NIGHT 2004

Finally!!!
St. James Social Club hosted their belated, long awaited and much
anticipated "Irish Night" on Wednesday in the parish
hall. It was due to be held on March 17 (we all know what kind
of night that was!)
It
did not disappoint. The
food was fabulous: Irish stew made with lamb, Irish soda bread
followed by a green dessert. Those involved in the preparation
and cleanup deserve a vote of thanks. The time and effort
involved is tremendous. Tables were beautifully set with green
placemats and each table had its own little leprechaun and
candle. Irish decorations were everywhere as were the
shamrocks, particularly those on Bev Hamm's shirt collar, courtesy
of his wife Lucille's artistic talent. It seems that just
about everyone was "wearing o' the green".
After
the meal some favourite Irish songs were sung and we must thank
Sandy Sutherland for playing the violin at this event. It is
always a pleasure to see her. However, something should be
done about the piano player's music. It always seems to take
flight during the performance. Well done Social Club!
