OF SOLOMON 3:1-9
Father of all,
we pray to you for those we love, but see no longer.
Grant them your peace,
let light perpetual shine upon them,
and in your loving wisdom and almighty power,
work in them the good purpose of your perfect will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
READING FROM THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON
The souls of the
righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch
them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and
their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from
us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in
the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of
immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive
great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of
himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a
sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their
visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through
the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and
the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will
understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love,
because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches
over his elect.
WISDOM OF SOLOMON 3:1-9
REFRAIN Precious in the
sight of the Lord is the death of his servants.
love the Lord, because he has heard the voice of my supplication,
because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him.
cords of death entangled me; the grip of the grave took hold of
me; I came to grief and sorrow.
I called upon the name of the Lord: "O Lord, I pray you, save
my life." R
is the Lord and righteous; our God is full of compassion.
Lord watches over the innocent; I was brought very low, and he
helped me. R
again to your rest, O my soul, for the Lord has treated you well.
you have rescued my life from death, my eyes from tears, and my
feet from stumbling. R
will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. R
READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF PETER
Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given
us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of
Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is
imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who
are being protected by the power of God through faith for a
salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you
rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer
various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith - being more
precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire -
may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus
Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him;
and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and
rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are
receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
1 PETER 1:3-9
HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
ACCORDING TO JOHN
"Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and
anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come
down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who
sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should
lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the
last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see
the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise
them up on the last day."
OVER THE GIFTS
Gracious and righteous Lord,
we are united in the love of Jesus Christ.
Accept all we offer you this day,
and bring us, with all your faithful people
who have gone before us,
into his eternal glory;
who is Lord, now and for ever.
God of love,
may the death and resurrection of Christ,
which we celebrate in this eucharist,
bring us, with the faithful departed,
into the peace of your eternal home.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ,
our hope and our salvation.
