Early
morning fire ravages rectory
|
The
Seaforth parish rectory was completely gutted by an early morning fire on
February 15th. Rector David Garrett and two guests awoke to the sound of
smoke detectors blaring as the house rapidly filled smoke. The fire
quickly spread throughout the entire residence consuming both the
structure and all Rev. Garrett’s personal effects. All three
residents escaped the burning building; however Rev. David Garrett
suffered from smoke inhalation and minor burns and, after a short
hospitalization, is recuperating with family in the New Glasgow area.
The rectory, last assessed in 1995, was insured; according to diocesan
insurance advisor, Jarvis de Conde, the parish has up to one year to make
a decision regarding the use of the insurance settlement. The picture
shown at right was taken on Monday, February 17 shortly before the
building was demolished to prevent any further injury. Firefighters
responded quickly to the call but were hampered by freezing temperatures
which caused their lines to freeze. To overcome this problem, a holding
pond was constructed on the front lawn to allow pumper trucks to use it as
a reservoir. The cause of the fire is still undetermined. The parish
advises that two funds are available for those wishing to make donations.
Cheques can be made out to David Garrett (for his personal use and no
receipts will be issued) or the Parish of Seaforth (for the restoration of
the rectory and receipts will be issued). Forward cheques to: Parish of
Seaforth, 53 Millside Drive, Porter’s Lake, N.S., B3E1J4. Please pray
for David and the parish of Seaforth. |
